…where the past still speaks

Come with me…

…and still matters

Welcome to the official site of Janus Tobias Saito-Madsen — historian, author, and storyteller of the North Sea world.

My work explores the dramatic lives, wars, and beliefs that shaped Scandinavia and the British Isles. From the rise of Gorm the Old and the forging of Denmark, to the fall of Cnut’s North Sea Empire, I write history-driven fiction and non-fiction grounded in deep research, archaeological insight, and narrative clarity.

Here you can find information about my books, historical projects, research journeys, and upcoming events, as well as ways to connect with me directly. Whether you discovered my work through medieval history, Viking studies, or museum culture, I’m glad you’re here — and I invite you to explore the worlds that still echo beneath our feet.

“This book has that perfect mix of deep research and gripping storytelling.”

The Stones of Gorm

Beginning in the Viking Age and following the rise of Europe’s oldest monarchy, this book traces the journey from Odin and Thor to the invasions of England and the struggle for power that ended in misfortune. A perfect introduction for readers who love epic adventure — yet want it firmly grounded in real history.

Deliberately written as an accessible entry point, each chapter can be read on its own, allowing you to explore the era further at your own pace.

Wolves in the Hall

In 1042, the last Danish king of England died — and with him ended an era of northern rule. Yet the struggle for the English crown was far from over. Rival claimants rose, and the great Danish invasions of 1069 and 1075 nearly changed the fate of both the British Isles and Scandinavia.

We follow the unfolding drama: a crusade is called, and a king who once met the emperor of Constantinople meets his end upon the distant shores of Cyprus.

A Companion

The Kings of Two Realms allegory explores the Danes who once ruled England — their reigns, their ambitions, and their flaws.
Who were they, and what shaped their rise and fall?
Discover their stories in this companion, written as a comprehensive guide to the age and its kings, and as an introduction to the significant figures who shaped history.

Book cover for Konger i To Riger by Janus T. Saito-Madsen, a Danish history book about kings who ruled both Denmark and England.

I grew tired of “historical” films and series where only fragments of the past survived beneath layers of invention.
As a Scandinavian historian, I wanted to tell these stories as they truly were — raw, human, and shaped by faith, power, and the cold light of the North.
History, to me, is not decoration. It is memory grounded in heritage — and memory deserves honesty.
